Series 5000: How it Works
Should a scanned check be paid?
The Series 5000 software is a product designed to process Unisys Check Image or IBM 3890 Check Image files to determine the answer to that question. To do this, the S5000 compares 17 check data characteristics at a rate of 40,000 items per minute per PC. Data characteristics analyzed by the S5000 include:
Duplicate serial number
Check amount out of range of usual check amounts
Excessive velocity increases
If needed, possible fraud items are flagged. The software then compares over 70 image characteristics at a rate of 600 per minute, including:
The likelihood the signature is valid
The size of the check compared with sizes normally used
The type of material in the check
Once it has identified the checks that need closer review by a human, the software scores each check and then classifies the checks into "Good," "Unsure" and "Refer" categories, for bank personnel to review. Checks denied by personnel review are made available to the appropriate branch for a final decision using the S5000i add-on package.
Extensive reports track every phase of the process -- from the time the check is scanned until the final decision is made at the branch level.
The S5000 software suite actually includes eight distinct modules:
Module 1: CAPTURE
The comprehensive first program allows operators to add or modify information in the customer databases, including adding customers, adding/deleting signers or modifying restrictions, addresses and related data. This program also allows access to the signature card TIFF image.
With this simple-to-use interface, the user can input an image, update information about the account and save the signature and/or document image to various online archives. The archive system can hold over a billion documents, and retrieval times are measured in fractions of a second.
Module 2: VERIFY
S5000 Verify
S5000 Select Checks
This module allows operators to see check images that need further review. The operator can accept the item or refer it for further review by a supervisor. Reasons for the referral, as well as all account and signature information, are presented by the software to the operator.
In the "Verify" screen (shown to the right), the system presents items classified as "unknown," so they can be reviewed by bank personnel. Here, the system highlights in red a restriction that requires human intervention.
The "Select Checks" screen (shown to the right) controls the analysis of raw Unisys check data -- at 40,000 per minute -- and selects those items that deserve detailed check image analysis. The system allows automatic selection of checks that are most likely to need further image analysis, and can process thousands of reader/sorter runs per day.
Module 3: SUPERVISOR
S5000 Supervisor Signature Review
S5000 Supervisor Systems Administration
In the "Supervisor" module, items referred by the computer to the supervisor are presented along with items referred by human operators. The computer might recognize an account is closed, for example, and refer an image of a check associated with that account directly to the supervisor. The supervisor may then accept the item or deny the item. If it is denied, it goes to another module for final disposition.
Many reports are available to the supervisor as well as research information about a particular customer--e.g., has this customer had returned items in the past, what kind and what amount, etc. These supervisor reports provide:
A comprehensive report of all activity.
Tracking of every item from entry to exit.
Tracking of operator decisions.
Managerial statistics.
Modules 4 & 5: ADMIN & ADMIN +
These modules control the start of the daily processing, and contain extensive reporting related to the database and operator/systems statistics.
Module 6: PAY/NO PAY
Items either directly denied for payment by the software or by the supervisor are presented in this module for final Pay/No-Pay decisions. Items not paid are logged into the system's archives and are available for various reports. With the S5000i add-on, users may make Pay/No-Pay decisions from remote locations, via a secure Web browser.
Module 7: INQUIRY
S5000 Inquiry Preapprove Checks
This module has two sections. The first section presents the account information, including all signers and any restrictions. The second section presents the account signature card, and any other related image documents, such as corporate resolutions, driver's license, photo, etc. With the S5000i add-on, users may access this Inquiry module from remote locations, via a secure Web browser.
Module 8: Super Authority
The bank's security department uses this module to set user IDs and permission levels. The user ID allows or restricts access to certain modules or groups of modules, and to the type of account within each module. This Super Authority module can also control system-wide settings, such as the floor limit for check amount, recognition level, re-review functions, or dollar threshold. Detailed security reports are available.
