Background

DATAVISION Corporation invented and has used our own proprietary software technology to prevent unauthorized copying of our software since 1983.  Through the years we’ve added improvements and have viewed the copy protection product as a method to keep honest people honest.

History With Unauthorized Copying

Any company in the software business has had its software copied in an unauthorized manner.  In over 25 years of use, we’ve had unprotected software copied, but usually by people who did not know they should not have copied it, but we have not had software copied when our DVSoftGuard software protected it.  IT managers have rolled our unprotected software into all of a department’s PC’s along with other software for convenience, customer employees have “borrowed” a copy to take a copy to do work at home, new acquires in mergers have been given a broad range of unprotected software to load without the manager checking the license, new PC purchases have been bought from companies supplied with a disk mask of all approved software, and so forth. 

They Did Not Mean It

We’ve never had a case where someone “hacked” into the software just to copy it.  Almost always it has been one of the above reasons or was from an over zealous employee trying to do work outside of the workplace without regards to the original software licenses signed by senior management.
